Pavement were a ground-breaking alternative-rock band from California, whose unique style of shambling lo-fi indie-rock was inspirational to many bands who followed them. They were formed in 1989 by Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg (known as S.M. and Spiral Stairs) and began making recordings and EPs. In 1992 they released debut album Slanted and Enchanted, which was instantly hailed by critics as a classic. Although it didn't sell well, it is still considered a seminal indie-rock album today. Follow-up Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994) was a little more polished and accessible, and "Cut Your Hair" enjoyed a few plays on MTV. Again, it was widely acclaimed by music critics, and even sold slightly better than the debut too. Wowee Zowee (1995) was more experimental, and was initially met with mixed reviews. However, over time more fans have warmed to it, and some view it as just as essential as the previous two albums. Brighten The Corners (1997) returned to the Crooked Rain easier-listening style, and sold reasonably well with positive reviews. Final album Terror Twilight (1999) was a gentle affair, written entirely by Malkmus. Shortly afterwards, the band decided to split.
