José Monge Cruz, in arte Camarón de la Isla (San Fernando, 5 dicembre 1950 – Badalona, 2 luglio 1992), è considerato il più grande cantante flamenco di tutti i tempi. Nato sesto di otto fratelli in una famiglia numerosa, ricevette il soprannome «Camarón» (gambero) dallo zio per la sua magrezza, i capelli rossi e la pelle bianca. In seguito, aggiungerà «de la Isla» (dell'isola), in riferimento alla sua città natale, San Fernando, situata sull'Isla de León. Sin da bambino, Camarón fu immerso nel mondo del flamenco grazie al padre, appassionato di canto. Ascoltava artisti come Manolo Caracol e Antonio Mairena nella casa dei Monge, frequentata dai più grandi cantanti andalusi dell'epoca. A soli sette anni iniziò a cantare in osterie e nella stazione tranviaria per aiutare la famiglia dopo la morte del padre. Nel 1958 esordì nei spettacoli pomeridiani della Venta de Vargas, dove fu notato da altri grandi cantanti. Nel 1962, a dodici anni, vinse il primo premio al Concorso di Flamenco del Festival di Montilla (Cordova). Iniziò a collaborare con Dolores Vargas e la Singla, intraprendendo tour in Europa e America. Nel 1966 vinse il primo premio al Festival del Cante Jondo di Mairena del Alcor e si trasferì a Madrid con Miguel de los Santos. Camarón ha rivoluzionato il flamenco, introducendo elementi jazz e rock, collaborando con musicisti come Tomatito, Paco de Lucía, Vicente Amigo, Fernando Ricas, Kiko Arguello e Paco Cepero. Alcuni dei suoi brani più rappresentativi sono: «La Leyenda del Tiempo», «Entre Dos Aguas», «Soleá por Bulerías» e «El Amante».
