Isis is a progressive metal band whose brand of lengthy experimental noodling has failed to find much mainstream success but has won legions of dedicated fans. The band evolved from the underlying dissatisfaction that its founder members felt with their previous bands and by 1998 they had released their first EP, Mosquito Control. By 2000 they had stabilized their line up and released their first full length album, Celestial. Musically the style of the first album was firmly steeped in the metalcore genre from where they drew their initial audience, but for their seminal second album Oceanic (2002) they incorporated a more relaxed feel which led to their disputed assignment to the "post-metal" label. It was a direction they explored further with their third album, Panopticon (2004). The album was critically acclaimed and featured the talents of Justin Chancellor of Tool on the track "Altered Course" - a band which Isis had often cited as an influence on their style.
