William nasce in un quartiere povero di Los Angeles e viene cresciuto dalla madre. Sin dall'adolescenza si mostra interessato al mondo della musica. Nel 1992, sotto l'etichetta Ruthless Records, viene introdotto da Eazy-E nel rap con la canzone Merry Muthafuckin' Xmas dell' EP 5150: Home 4 tha Sick del rapper ex. N.W.A. Insieme agli amici Kim Hill (sostituita nel 2003 da Fergie), apl.de.ap e Taboo fonda nel 1996 il gruppo dal nome Black Eyed Peas con il quale raggiungerà il successo in tutto il mondo. Nel 2007, dopo quattro album di successo con i Black Eyed Peas, l'artista pubblica il suo terzo album solista intitolato Songs About Girls. Questo disco racchiude canzoni che raccontano la vita sentimentale del rapper degli ultimi sette anni. Nel 2008 per appoggiare Barack Obama alla corsa alla Casa Bianca, realizza il brano Yes We Can, basato sullo slogan di Obama e realizza un videoclip che vede la partecipazione di molti personaggi dello star system. Questo pezzo fu poi seguito dalla canzone We Are the Ones dove anche qui compaiono personaggi celebri come Jessica Alba. Notevole il supporto che il cantante ha fornito al candidato Obama per le elezioni: infatti will.i.am ha partecipato a numerose conferenze ed eventi organizzati a supporto di Barack Obama ed in alcuni di essi ha interpretato il brano Yes We Can. L'ultima creazione del rapper per Barack Obama è stata la canzone It's a New Day, in cui celebra la vittoria del candidato alle elezioni presidenziali nel 2008. Nel relativo clip compaiono diverse celebrità, tra cui i suoi colleghi Fergie, Taboo ed apl.de.ap, il rapper Kanye West, le attrici Kerry Washington e Olivia Wilde. Ha realizzato, insieme ad altri personaggi del mondo dello spettacolo, la campagna benefica In My Name proposta per far conoscere a tutti i grave disagio della povertà. will.i.am oltre ad essere famoso come leader dei Black Eyed Peas, lo è anche per aver prodotto dischi di numerosi artisti tra cui Michael Jackson, Fergie, Sergio Mendes, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Flo Rida, Nicole Scherzinger, David Guetta, Sting, Cheryl Cole ed Eva Simons. Nel 2010 will.i.am ha partecipato insieme a tantissimi altri artisti alla registrazione della canzone We Are the World 25 for Haiti per aiutare la popolazione di Haiti colpita dal terremoto. Inoltre, ha cantato Wavin' Flag con K'naan musica di David Guetta. La prima esibizione live di questa canzone è avvenuta al concerto di apertura dei Mondiali di Calcio 2010 in Sudafrica. Nello stesso anno, will.i.am è stato totalmente impegnato con il tour mondiale dei Black Eyed Peas e con la produzione di brani per il nuovo progetto del gruppo e per altri cantanti. Il rover NASA "Curiosity" in missione su Marte, invia dal pianeta rosso alla terra una canzone del rapper. La canzone, intitolata "Reach For The Stars" e scritta appositamente per l'esperimento, è la prima ad essere stata inviata da un altro pianeta al nostro.
