Considerata uno dei gruppi più importanti della scena psichedelica della città tra la metà e la fine degli anni '60, la band era essenzialmente un gruppo di improvvisazione musicale (jam band). Quicksilver Messenger Service ha raggiunto grande popolarità nell'area della Baia di San Francisco e tra gli appassionati di rock psichedelico in tutto il mondo. Molti dei loro album hanno raggiunto le prime 30 posizioni delle classifiche Billboard Pop.
