Polisman Duncan Brady tog en kaffe p det fik
dr han fikat varje kvll i tjnst i drygt halva sitt liv.
Han segla' mot negressen bakom disken, dr hon stod
och skljde glas och koppar som hon alltid hade gjort.
Han tnkte: "Hon har aldrig nn'sin haft en ledig kvll;
Hon borde slutat fr lngese'n."
Han titta' ut mot gatan, och den drgg som levde dr.
Hit vallfrdade dom som mste stilla n't begr.
Det stod langare och hallickar och horor verallt,
och i rnnstenen lg alkisar och trashankar som svalt.
Han tnkte: "42:a Gatan r ett jvla trsk.
Dom borde sprngt den fr lngese'n."
Duncan Brady hade hustru och en son p nitton r.
Hans fru hade en lskare som hon trffa' d och d.
Men der rrde inte Brady, han var less p krringen
fr hon tjatade frn det hon vakna' upp p morgonen.
Han skakade p huvudet och viska' fr sej sjlv:
"Jag borde skilt mej fr lngese'n."
Fr Brady var hans ende som en frmling i hans liv.

Duncan Brady reste sej frsiktigt fr sin onda rygg,

Men just som han var frdig s hrde han ett skrik
frn baren, och ett ljud som om n'n krossade porslin.
Han lsgjorde revolvern och vste fr sej sjlv:
"Hr borde hnt n't fr lngese'n."
I baren stod tv ynglingar i mask och grova skor;

Men Brady skt direkt, och sedan skt han om igen;

Och snart var baren fylld av journalister och polis,
men Brady ville inte sja n't om tragedin.
Han satt i sin patrullbil och muttra' fr sig sjlv;
"Jag borde slutat fr lngese'n."
Fr vad ingen annan visste var att Bradys egen grabb
var en av dom som ddes bakom rnarmaskerna.
Han sg det nr man hade dragit av dom huvorna,
och beflet frga' Brady om han knde mrdarna.
D nickade han sorgset mot den ene ynglingen:
