Sam Cooke (1931-1964) was a legendary American singer, songwriter, and record producer, considered one of the pioneers of soul music. Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Cooke began his musical career singing gospel in his local church. His rich and powerful vocal style, his musical sensitivity, and his songs that addressed social issues such as racial equality made him a cultural icon of great significance. Cooke was assassinated in 1964 at the age of 33, leaving an unfillable void in American music.
