Chester Arthur Burnett, better known as Howlin' Wolf (White Station, Mississippi, June 10, 1910 – Chicago, Illinois, January 10, 1976), was an American blues singer and musician. Nicknamed «Big Foot» and «Bull Cow» for his imposing stature, he adopted the stage name Howlin' Wolf in the late 1920s, inspired by stories about wolves told to him by his grandfather or the namesake song by bluesman Funny Papa Smith. Influenced by artists such as Charlie Patton (who taught him to play guitar), the Mississippi Sheiks, Tommy Johnson, and Jimmie Rodgers, Howlin' Wolf developed a powerful and distinctive vocal style, characterized by a deep and hypnotic growl. Sonny Boy Williamson II, who lived with him and his sister for a period, taught him to play the harmonica. During the 1930s he worked as a farmer in Arkansas, while during World War II he served in the US Army as a radio operator in Seattle. In 1948 he formed his first band in Chicago and began recording for Chess Records. Among his most famous songs are «Smokestack Lightnin'», «Killing Floor» and «Spoonful». Howlin' Wolf is considered one of the pillars of electric blues, whose influence extends to genres such as rock and roll and heavy metal.
