Stephen Joshua Sondheim (New York, March 22, 1930 – New York, November 26, 2021) was an American composer, lyricist, and playwright considered one of the most important figures in 20th-century musical theatre. His influence on the development of the modern musical genre is fundamental. Sondheim composed some of the most significant works in the American theatrical landscape of the second half of the 20th century, including *A Little Night Music*, *Sweeney Todd* and *Into the Woods*.
