Soul Eater is a manga written and illustrated by Atsushi Okubo, serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine from May 12, 2004, to August 12, 2013. The story follows Maka Albarn and Soul Evans, students at the DWMA (Death Weapon Meister Academy), an institution that trains young warriors capable of forming a partnership with sentient weapons to fight demons. Okubo preceded the regular publication with three one-shot chapters in 2003, published on various special editions of Gangan Powered and Gangan Wing magazines. The 113 chapters of the manga have been collected into 25 tankobon volumes under the Gangan Comics label along with the initial self-contained chapters. Soul Eater has achieved great success, selling millions of copies worldwide and giving rise to several derivative works, including an animated television series, animated films, and video games.
