Newsies is a musical with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman and book by Harvey Fierstein. Set in 1899 New York City, the story follows a group of newsboys who rebel against the price hike imposed by newspaper tycoons. The musical is based on the 1992 film of the same name directed by Kenny Ortega, but features a more developed plot and complex characters. Newsies premiered on Broadway in 2012 to critical acclaim and commercial success, running for over 1,000 performances until August 24, 2014. The musical was nominated for eight Tony Awards, winning two: Best Original Score and Best Choreography. Among the most famous songs from Newsies are "Carrying the Banner", "Seize the Day" and "Santa Fe".
