Ferry Aid was a British supergroup formed in 1987 with the aim of raising funds for the victims of the Zeebrugge ferry disaster, which occurred on March 6th of that year. The group consisted of some of Britain's biggest artists of the time, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, David Bowie and Chris de Burgh. Their only single, a cover of «Let It Be» by The Beatles, topped the British charts and became an international success, selling over one million copies. Proceeds from the sale of the song were donated to the families of the victims of the disaster. Ferry Aid represented the peak of a series of musical benefit initiatives of the 1980s, which demonstrated the power of music as a tool for solidarity and support in times of tragedy.
