John Mellencamp (Seymour, Indiana, October 7, 1951) is an American musician, singer, and songwriter considered one of the pillars of American rock in the 1980s. Initially known as Johnny Cougar, he changed his name to John Cougar and then to John Cougar Mellencamp to reflect his musical evolution. Mellencamp has sold over 40 million records worldwide, earning 13 Grammy Award nominations, winning one. In 2008, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
