IAM is a French hip hop group from Marseille, formed in 1989. The group consists of Akhenaton (Philippe Fragione), Shurik'n (Geoffroy Mussard), Freeman (Malek Brahimi), Kheops (Eric Mazel), Imhotep (Pascal Perez) and Kephren (Francois Mendy). The acronym IAM has several interpretations, including 'Invasion Arrivee de Mars' ('Invasion from Mars'). Mars is often used as a metaphor for Marseille in IAM's songs. Considered pioneers of French rap, IAM have contributed to defining the sound and culture of hip hop in France. Their lyrics, often political and social, reflect the realities of everyday life in Marseille and the suburbs of France.
