The Smiths were a British indie rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The group consisted of Morrissey (vocals), Johnny Marr (guitar), Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (drums). Considered one of the most influential bands in independent music of the 1980s, The Smiths combined catchy melodies with introspective and often melancholic lyrics by Morrissey, which addressed themes such as alienation, loneliness and unrequited love.
