I membri Blake Schwarzenbach (voce e chitarra), Adam Pfahler (chitarra) e Chris Bauermeister (basso) si sono conosciuti a Los Angeles, dove hanno frequentato la stessa scuola superiore, e poi a New York City, all'università. La band ha sempre mantenuto un forte spirito DIY, gestendo autonomamente la propria attività.
