The Pillows are a Japanese alternative rock band formed in Tokyo in 1989. Composed of Sawao Yamanaka (vocals and guitar), Makoto “Machi” Kondo (guitar) and Hiroshi “Hashi” Sato (drums), the band achieved considerable success in Japan, releasing numerous albums and singles between the 1990s and 2000s. Their music is characterized by energetic guitar riffs, catchy melodies and often ironic and imaginative lyrics. International fame arrived in 2000 thanks to the soundtrack of the anime FLCL (Fooly Cooly), produced by Gainax. The song "Little Baka Girl" became a global success among fans of Japanese animation, opening the doors to a new international fanbase. The Pillows continued to release music until 2025, maintaining their popularity in Japan and solidifying their status as a cult band for fans of alternative rock and anime.
