Michelle Shocked, born Karen Michelle Johnston, is an American singer-songwriter born in 1968. Active since the 1980s, Shocked is known for her incisive folk-rock style and often provocative lyrics that address social issues such as war, gender equality, and religion. Her debut album, *Texas Hold 'Em*, released in 1986, was a major success thanks to the single "Anchorage".
