José Manuel Cerqueira Afonso dos Santos, known professionally as Zeca Afonso (Lisbon, 1929 – Lisbon, 1987), was one of the most influential singer-songwriters in Portugal. Considered an icon of Portuguese popular music, he intertwined his music with social and political themes, becoming the voice of a generation seeking freedom and social justice. Afonso began his career in the 1950s, collaborating with various orchestras and musical groups.
