"Wat zit je daar te kleumen, Klaasje"
Klinkt plots de stem van de pastoor
"Ik wacht op vader, die is vissen
Met Kerstmis is hij altijd thuis"
"Dan moet jij maar op God vertrouwen"
Zegt de pastoor en slaat een kruis
Maar het is nu al half negen
En er is nog geen mast te zien
Terwijl de knaap zit te vertrouwen
Wordt het ongemerkt hlf tien
Buiten wordt het almaar kouder
Ja, zijn neus bevriest zowat
Dan schiet hem opeens te binnen
Als ik eens tot Jezus bad
Devoot vouwt hij de verkleumde knuistjes
En vraagt: "heer Jezus, is mijn vader ver
Dronken of nog aan het vissen"
Dan opeens ziet hij een ster
"Kijk in die ster, dat is een spiegel"
Klinkt er een onbekende stem
Hij kijk omhoog en ziet zijn vader
Voor op het schip, die zwaait naar hem
Dit wordt de vissersknaap te machtig
Hij rent naar huis, naar moeder toe
Onkundig om een woord te zeggen
"Wees maar gerust", troost hem zijn moe
En eindelijk, na een mok anijsmelk
Komt de knaap weer wat bij stem
Struik'lend over zijn tong zegt hij
"... Ik zag de ster van Bethlehem"
"En in die ster zag ik ons vader
Zwaaiend op de voorplecht staan
Ja, dat zag ik, weet nu zeker
Die komt overmorgen aan"
Moeder brengt de knaap naar boven
En legt hem koesterend op een oor
En inderdaad ontbreekt kerstavond
