Cresciuta a Southgate, Londra, Amy si appassionò alla musica fin da giovane, ascoltando artisti come Salt-n-Pepa e Sarah Vaughan. Formò un gruppo rap amatoriale chiamato Sweet 'n' Sour all'età di dieci anni e frequentò la Sylvia Young Theatre School prima di trasferirsi alla BRIT School a Selhurst, Croydon. Iniziò a cantare professionalmente a sedici anni dopo che il suo amico Tyler James mandò una sua demo ad un talent scout.
