Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez (1933-1973) was a Chilean singer-songwriter, musician, theater director, and poet. Considered one of the most important Latin American songwriters of the 20th century, Jara dedicated his music to social struggle and the defense of human rights. Born in Santiago, Chile, he trained as a teacher of theater and music before dedicating himself fully to his artistic career. His music, characterized by strong political commitment and popular Chilean melodies, quickly became popular among the masses. Jara collaborated with important Latin American artists such as Joan Manuel Serrat and Mercedes Sosa, participating in concerts and international festivals. In 1973, during the military coup in Chile, Jara was arrested and murdered by the police. His death marked a tragic moment in the history of the Chilean social movement and his music continues to be a powerful testament to the struggle for social justice.
