The Birthday Party, originally known as The Boys Next Door, were an Australian post-punk group active from 1976 to 1983. Founded in Melbourne by Nick Cave (vocals), Mick Harvey (guitar), Tracy Pew (bass) and Phill Calvert (drums), the band quickly gained popularity for their dark, aggressive and theatrical music. Cave, with his magnetic charisma and provocative lyrics, emerged as a central figure in the Australian music scene of the 1980s. 1979 saw the release of their debut album, "The Birthday Party", followed by "Junkyard" in 1981. The group collaborated with artists like The Bad Seeds and Sonic Youth. Their music was influenced by punk rock, industrial music and avant-garde. After a series of intense tours and internal problems, The Birthday Party disbanded in 1983. Nick Cave then formed a new band, The Bad Seeds, continuing to explore dark and introspective themes in his music.
