The comic strip, which debuted in the United States on August 5, 1924, tells the story of an orphaned girl who lives with her adoptive family. The series was a huge success and inspired several audio-visual adaptations, including a radio serial, a musical comedy in 1977, and three feature films in the 1930s and 1981. Gray created the strip for over forty years until his death in 1968, after which it was continued by other authors until 2010.
