How High The Moon
Benny Goodman
Music and Lyrics by Morgan Lewis and Nancy Hamilton
Some where there's music,
How faint the tune!
Some where there's heaven,
How high the moon!
There is no moon above
When love is far away too,
Til it comes true
That you love me as I love you.
Some where there's music,
it's where you are.
Some where there's heaven,
How near, how far!
The darkest night would shine
If you would come to me soon.
Until you will, how still my heart,
How high the moon!
Benny Goodman (1909-1986) was an American clarinetist, composer, and bandleader considered one of the pioneers of modern jazz. Born in Chicago to a Jewish family, Goodman began playing the clarinet at the age of seven. After playing in several local orchestras, in 1934 he formed his famous orchestra, which quickly became a landmark for swing jazz. Goodman was one of the first artists to bring jazz to the mainstream public, thanks to his sold-out concerts and popular recordings. His music was characterized by a combination of rhythmic swing, catchy melodies, and virtuoso improvisations. Among Goodman's most representative pieces are "Sing, Sing, Sing", "Let's Dance" and "Stompin' at the Savoy". His orchestra was composed of some of the best jazz musicians of the time, including Teddy Wilson, Lionel Hampton and Gene Krupa. Goodman contributed to spreading jazz worldwide, with tours in Europe and Asia. His influence on jazz has been enormous, inspiring generations of musicians.
