Jacques Romain Georges Brel (Schaerbeek, April 8, 1929 – Los Angeles, October 9, 1978) was a Belgian singer-songwriter, composer, actor, and poet who wrote in French. Considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, Brel achieved international fame for his intense and dramatic songs, characterized by deep introspection and powerful, engaging vocal expression. His music ranged from traditional chansonnier to musical theatre and avant-garde, influencing generations of artists worldwide. Besides music, Brel also worked in film, acting and directing films like *Le Far-West* (1973), which was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Among his most famous songs are *Ne me quitte pas*, *Amsterdam*, *Quand on n'a rien*, *Mathilde*.
