Se mit à tintinnabuler.
Dans le calme et tiède silence,
Soudain, sorti je ne sais d'où,
Un petit vieillard aux yeux doux
Me fit un grand salut baroque
Et j'eus l'étrange sentiment
De vivre un très ancien moment
Fort éloigné de notre époque.
Je marchandais un vieux bouquin
Dont la reliure en maroquin
Gardait l'odeur des chambres closes
Lorsque, je ne sais trop comment,
Je me mis, au bout d'un moment,
A parler de tout autre chose
Mais le vieux ne connaissait rien.
Quel étonnement fut le mien
De constater que le bonhomme
Ne savait rien, évidemment,
Des faits et des événements
Qui passionnaient les autres hommes.
Il ignorait tout de ce temps,
Aussi bien les gens importants
Que les plus célèbres affaires
Et c'était peut-être cela
Qui, dans ce tranquille coin-là,
Créait cette étrange atmosphère.
J'acquis le bouquin poussiéreux
Et je partis le cœur heureux.
Le chat noir, toujours impassible,
Dans un petit clignement d'yeux
Parut me dire, malicieux :
"Tu ne croyais pas ça possible !..."
Je m'en allai, et puis voilà.
Mon anecdote finit là
Car cette histoire ne comprend
Ni chute, ni moralité
Mais quand je suis trop affectée
Par le potins que l'on colporte,
Par les scandales dégoûtants,
Par les procédés révoltants
Des requins de la politique,
Afin de mieux m'éloigner d'eux
Je vais passer une heure ou deux
