Eric Burdon and The Animals is the name by which the legendary British rock band known as The Animals are recognized today. Formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1962, the group originally consisted of Eric Burdon (vocals), Alan Price (keyboards), Hilton Valentine (guitar), Chas Chandler (bass) and John Steel (drums). They achieved international fame in the 1960s with a powerful and original blues-rock sound. 1964 was a turning point: the single "House of the Rising Sun", a cover of an American folk song, became a global hit, topping charts in numerous countries. Other successes that cemented The Animals' status were "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "See See Rider". The band went through several phases of musical evolution, moving from a more traditional blues-rock sound to psychedelic and progressive sonorities. In 1966 Burdon left the group to pursue a solo career, but The Animals continued to exist with different vocalists until 1970. Eric Burdon has since reformed the band on several occasions, collaborating with musicians of diverse backgrounds and keeping alive the legacy of The Animals. Their impact on rock music has been significant: they have influenced generations of artists and their sound remains a benchmark for many musicians.
