Otis Ray Redding Jr. (1941-1967) was an American soul singer, considered one of the most influential artists in the genre. Born in Dawson, Georgia, Redding began his musical career singing in churches and nightclubs in the Southern United States. In 1962 he signed with Stax Records, where he achieved success with songs like "Respect" (a cover of Aretha Franklin's) and "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fine". His powerful and emotive vocal style, characterized by a wide range and an extraordinary ability to interpret, made him one of the most beloved soul singers. Among his most famous songs are "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Try a Little Tenderness" and the posthumous worldwide success "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay". His tragic death in a plane crash in 1967, at the age of only 26, marked the end of a promising career and left a void in the musical landscape. Redding is remembered as a brilliant and innovative artist who helped define the style of modern soul.
