Lady Oscar (Le rose di Versailles in Italian) is a manga written and illustrated by Riyoko Ikeda, serialized in the Japanese magazine Margaret from 1972 to 1973. The story follows the adventures of Oscar François de Jarjayc, a young woman raised as a man to serve the French royal family during the period of the Revolution. The plot explores themes of identity, love and justice in a historical context rich in political and social intrigue. The manga has achieved enormous success in Japan and worldwide, becoming one of the most popular in the shojo genre. Ikeda later created two spin-offs and ten additional stories, collected in five tankobon volumes. Among the representative musical pieces of the series are "Rose of Versailles", "The Rose" and "Oscar's Theme".
