Stan Getz (Stanley Gayetsky, March 9, 1927 – June 6, 1991) was an American jazz saxophonist. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Getz developed a brilliant technique and a warm, lyrical sound on the tenor saxophone that made him one of the most influential musicians of cool jazz. After beginning his career in the 1940s with swing bands, Getz established himself as a leader during the golden age of bebop in the 1950s. His collaboration with João Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto on the recording of "The Girl from Ipanema" (1964) led to global success and helped popularize bossa nova worldwide. Getz was a versatile musician who collaborated with artists such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Chet Baker.
