Public Image Ltd. (PIL), short for Public Image Limited, is a British musical group formed in London in 1978 by singer and frontman John Lydon, better known as Johnny Rotten for his time with the Sex Pistols. After the dissolution of the Pistols, Lydon decided to form PIL with the aim of exploring new musical territories, abandoning punk rage in favor of a more experimental and introspective sound. PIL has gone through several stylistic phases throughout its career, moving from aggressive post-punk to electronic rhythms, influenced by reggae and dub sounds.
