Big Star è stata una band rock americana formatasi a Memphis, Tennessee, nel 1971 da Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, Jody Stephens e Andy Hummel. Il gruppo si sciolse nel 1974, ma si riorganizzò con una nuova formazione quasi vent'anni dopo. Nel suo primo periodo, lo stile musicale della band si basava sul lavoro di gruppi del British Invasion come The Beatles e The Kinks, oltre che su The Byrds, The Beach Boys e altri artisti americani. Al power pop risultante, Big Star aggiunse temi oscuri e nichilistici, producendo uno stile che prefigurava l'alternative rock degli anni '80 e '90. Prima di sciogliersi, Big Star creò un corpus di lavoro fondamentale che non ha mai smesso di ispirare le generazioni successive, secondo Rolling Stone. Tra i brani più rappresentativi si ricordano «September Gurls», «In the Street» e «Thirteen».
