José Manuel Cerqueira Afonso dos Santos, known professionally as Zeca Afonso (Lisbon, 1929 – Lisbon, 1987), was one of the most influential singer-songwriters in Portugal. Considered an icon of Portuguese popular music, he intertwined his music with social and political themes, becoming the voice of a generation seeking freedom and social justice. Afonso began his career in the 1950s, collaborating with various orchestras and musical groups. In 1964, he released his first album, "O Homem da Meia Noite", which launched him onto the Portuguese music scene.
