All around the water tank
Leakin in the rain
A thousand miles away from home
Waitin for a train
I went up to the brakeman
Asked for a line of talk
He said If you got money man
I will see that you dont walk
I havent got a nickel
Not a penny can I show
Get of get off you railroad bum
And he slammed the boxcar door.
Put me off in Texas
Place I dearly love
Wide open spaces around me
Moon and stars up above
Theres no one seem to care me
Either lend me a helpin hand
Im on my way from Frisco
Im goin back to Dixieland
My pocketbook is empty
And my heart is full of pain
A thousand miles away from home
Waitin for a train.
Mississippi John Hurt, born John Smith Hurt (Mississippi, March 8 or July 2, 1892 – New York, April 2, 1966), was an American singer and guitarist of folk blues music. His musical career began in the 1920s with performances in Mississippi venues. In 1928, he recorded his first discs for Paramount Records, achieving immediate success thanks to his unique style that blended traditional blues with elements of popular and country music. Hurt became famous for his original songs like "Avalon" and "Candy Man", but also for his interpretations of traditional blues tunes. His slide guitar, played with extraordinary skill, was characterized by a warm and rich sound. After a break from music in the 1930s, Hurt returned to prominence in the 1960s thanks to the folk-blues revival. He collaborated with artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, contributing to spreading his music to a wider audience. Mississippi John Hurt is considered one of the pioneers of modern blues and his style influenced generations of musicians.
