Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921) è stato un compositore tedesco, noto soprattutto per l'opera Hansel e Gretel, una delle opere più popolari del repertorio operistico. Nato a Bonn, Humperdinck studiò musica al Conservatorio di Berlino. La sua carriera musicale iniziò come organista e insegnante di canto. Nel 1886 debuttò con l'opera Il principe di Homburg. Hansel e Gretel, composta nel 1893, fu un successo immediato e lo consacrò come uno dei compositori più importanti del suo tempo.
