
Leonard Bernstein (nato Louis Bernstein il 25 agosto 1918 a Lawrence, Massachusetts – morto il 14 ottobre 1990 a New York City) è stato un direttore d'orchestra, compositore e pianista statunitense di fama mondiale. Considerato uno dei più grandi musicisti del XX secolo, Bernstein ha lasciato un'impronta indelebile nel mondo della musica classica, della musica leggera e del teatro musicale. Dopo aver studiato al Curtis Institute of Music a Filadelfia, Bernstein debuttò come direttore d'orchestra con la New York Philharmonic Orchestra nel 1943, sostituendo all'ultimo minuto il direttore Bruno Walter. Il suo talento fu immediatamente riconosciuto e da quel momento in poi si affermò come uno dei direttori più stimati del mondo. Bernstein è noto per le sue interpretazioni appassionate e innovative di opere classiche, ma ha anche composto musiche originali di grande successo, tra cui la colonna sonora dell'opera teatrale "West Side Story" (1957), che gli valse un premio Tony Award.
