Mulatu Astatke (Addis Ababa, 1943) is considered the father of Ethio-jazz. Astatke began his career in the 1960s, studying Western classical music and jazz at the Addis Ababa Music Academy. After playing with several local bands, he moved to London in 1975, where he continued to play and record music. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Astatke achieved international success thanks to his unique style that blends jazz, funk, soul, and Ethiopian musical traditions. Among his most famous tracks are "Yekatit 12th", "Adey Abeba" and "Gena". In 2013 he won a Grammy Award for his influence on world music. Astatke continues to play and record music, influencing generations of musicians worldwide.
