Operation Ivy were an American ska punk band formed in 1987 in the East Bay of Berkeley, California. The original lineup consisted of Jesse Michaels (vocals), Dave Mello (drums), Tim Armstrong (guitar and vocals, known as Lint) and Matt Freeman (bass, nicknamed Matt McCall by Jesse, inspired by the TV series "The Equalizer"). Paul Bae often played saxophone without being an official member. The band profoundly influenced the development of ska punk in the 1990s, with an energetic and melodic sound that blended elements of punk rock, reggae, and traditional ska music. Their only studio album, "Energy", released in 1989, is considered a classic of the genre. After the band's dissolution in 1989, the members went on to pursue successful musical careers with groups like Rancid (Tim Armstrong) and The Long Beach Dub Allstars (Matt Freeman). Some of Operation Ivy's most representative songs include "Knowledge", "Sound System" and "Unity".
