This Mortal Coil è stato un supergruppo dream pop guidato da Ivo Watts-Russell, fondatore dell'etichetta discografica britannica 4AD. Sebbene Watts-Russell e John Fryer fossero tecnicamente gli unici due membri ufficiali, l'output discografico della band ha visto una vasta rotazione di artisti ospiti, molti dei quali erano sotto contratto con la 4AD o in qualche modo associati a essa. Circa la metà delle canzoni pubblicate erano cover, spesso di artisti psichedelici e folk degli anni '60 e '70, che hanno dimostrato il posto di questi due generi nella storia e nella formazione del dream pop. Su ogni uno dei tre album della band, almeno una canzone sarebbe stata anche una cover di un artista 4AD, e la maggior parte delle canzoni originali erano strumentali. Tra le collaborazioni più note spicca quella con Elizabeth Fraser degli Cocteau Twins, la cui voce eterea ha caratterizzato molti brani del gruppo. Tra i brani rappresentativi ricordiamo "Song to the Siren", "Ghost of Love" e "The Last Day of Summer".
