Il nome del gruppo fu suggerito da Priscilla, sorella di Fred Johnson, ispirandosi alla popolare acconciatura dell'epoca, la "Marcell wave". Nel 1961 hanno riscosso un enorme successo con una nuova versione della ballata "Blue Moon", caratterizzata dall'introduzione vocale "bomp-baba-bomp" e "dip-da-dip".
