Nel 1983 formò la band Double Trouble con il bassista Tommy Shannon e il batterista Chris Layton. Il loro album di debutto "Texas Flood" (1983) ottenne un immediato successo critico e commerciale, consacrando Vaughan come una nuova stella del blues moderno. Il suo stile chitarristico era caratterizzato da un'incredibile velocità, precisione e potenza, combinata a un tocco emotivo e bluesy.
