Nato a Huentitán El Alto, Jalisco, il 17 febbraio 1940, ha iniziato la sua carriera musicale negli anni '60, conquistando rapidamente il pubblico con la sua potente voce e le sue interpretazioni emozionali di canzoni tradizionali e moderne. Fernández è stato un'icona culturale del Messico, noto per i suoi successi come "Volver, Volver", "Estos Celajes" e "La Malagueña".
