Ancient Rites is a Belgian band playing black metal (initially) and folk metal (recently) formed in 1988. The initial lineup consisted of guitarists Johan and Phillip, drummer Stefan and Gunther Theys on bass and vocals. In 1990 the *Dark Ritual* demo was released in the underground scene, gaining worldwide attention just as black metal was gaining importance in the metal scene. Soon after the release of this demo Phillip died in a car crash and not long after, Stefan committed suicide. However painful this episode was to the band, they decided to continue and Stefan's position was taken by his drum roadie Walter Van Cortenberg. Ancient Rites has released numerous albums, including *The Darkest Hour* (1994), *Blood of the Ancients* (1996) and *The Serpent's Embrace* (2003). Their musical style is characterized by dark and atmospheric sounds, with folk and melodic influences. Some of their most representative songs include *Dark Ritual*, *Blood of the Ancients* and *The Serpent's Embrace*.
