Margareth Menezes (born Purificação Costa on March 19, 1954) is a Brazilian singer, actress, and politician. Born in Salvador de Bahia, she is considered an icon of Bahian music and has significantly contributed to the global spread of the *axé* rhythm. Her musical career began in the 1970s with her participation in the musical group *Os Tincoãs*. In 1982, she released her first solo album, *Margareth Menezes*, which brought her immediate success.
