Gli Eels sono un gruppo rock alternativo formatosi nel 1995 dal musicista e cantautore Mark Oliver Everett (conosciuto anche come Man Called E, Mr. E o semplicemente E; figlio del famoso fisico Hugh Everett III). Everett ha fondato gli Eels con il batterista Butch Norton e il bassista Tommy Walter (conosciuto anche con lo pseudonimo Abandoned Pools) quando la sua carriera solista ebbe un rallentamento. Il gruppo ha rapidamente raggiunto la fama con l'uscita del loro primo album *Beautiful Freak* nel 1996, quando una traccia dell'album, "Beloved Monster", è stata utilizzata nel film *Shrek*.
