Harold Arlen (Hyman Arluck), born in New York City in 1905 and died in Los Angeles in 1986, was one of the most influential American composers of the 20th century. Arlen composed music for Broadway, Hollywood, and popular music in general. His characteristic style combines catchy melodies with complex harmonies, often with a touch of blues and jazz. Among his most famous works are "Over the Rainbow", soundtrack of the film "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), which won an Oscar in 1940, and "Blues in the Night", a song that became a jazz classic. Arlen collaborated with some of the greatest American lyricists, including E.Y. Harburg and Ira Gershwin. His music has been performed by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald. Harold Arlen is considered one of the pillars of 20th-century American music.
