Carlos Varela (born April 11, 1963) is a Cuban singer-songwriter of nueva trova, often referred to as "Cuba's Bob Dylan". In the 1980s he joined the Nueva Trova musical movement, a political and poetic musical genre connected with the Cuban Revolution. Varela is known for his songs that address social, political, and personal themes with a strong social critique component. His music is characterized by melancholic melodies and introspective lyrics, often accompanied by acoustic guitars and traditional Cuban percussion. Among his most famous songs are "El hombre que se fue", "La vida es un sueño" and "Cuba va". Varela has collaborated with numerous international artists, including Joan Manuel Serrat and Silvio Rodríguez. His music has been influenced by singer-songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Víctor Jara.
