Manfred Mann is a German-British musician and composer known for leading the eponymous rock band active between the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Lublin, Poland, in 1940, Manfred Mann moved to England with his family during World War II. He began playing the piano at the age of six and studied classical music at the Royal College of Music in London. In 1962 he formed the Manfred Mann, a rock band that achieved great success in the 1960s thanks to songs like "Do Wah Diddy Diddy", "Pretty Flamingo" and "Sha La La". The group was characterized by a fusion of blues, jazz and pop elements, with influences from American rhythm and blues. In 1970 the band disbanded and Manfred Mann continued his career as a solo musician, releasing albums of classical, jazz and progressive rock music. Throughout his long career, Manfred Mann has collaborated with numerous artists, including Elton John, The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney.
