Nocturnus è stato un gruppo musicale di technical death metal statunitense formatosi a Tampa, Florida, nel 1986 da Richard Bateman (basso) e Mike Browning (batteria/voce). A completare la formazione iniziale i chitarristi Gino Marino e Vincent Crowley. Considerati pionieri del genere, Nocturnus hanno influenzato profondamente il panorama musicale death metal degli anni '90 con un sound caratterizzato da intricate strutture musicali, atmosfere dark e testi spesso ispirati a temi filosofici e occulti. Il loro album di debutto, *The Key to the Necropolis*, uscito nel 1990, è considerato un classico del genere. Dopo una breve pausa, la band ha pubblicato il secondo album, *Thresholds of Infinity*, nel 1992.
